Malaysian Sambal Seafood

The Sambal seafood dish is a popular Malay food. It’s tasty and tad spicy.

Fun Fact — The Sambal sauce pairs well with egg pancakes & rice.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Sambal sauce

  • Fresh chile de arbol pepper seeds
  • Dried chili de arbol pepper seeds — soaked.
  • Dried shrimp — soaked.
  • Shallots
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Belacan — optional.

Ingredients for Sambal seafood (in this case, squid)

  • Squid
  • Chopped onion
  • Soy sauce
  • Sambal sauce
  • Salt
  • Green onion
  • Lemon or lime juice

Instructions

Instructions for Sambal Sauce

  1. Blend ingredients with blender.
  2. Heat pot with a generous amount of oil at low heat, and add the blended mix. The amount of oil should be slightly more than the amount of the mix.
  3. Cook and constantly stir for about 10 minutes.

Instructions for Sambal Squid

  1. Boil the squid for 5-8 minutes.
  2. Heat pan with Sambal sauce.
  3. Add the onion and squid.
  4. Fry for about 5-10 minutes.
  5. Add soy sauce, salt, & lemon juice.
  6. Sprinkle the chopped green onion over it.
